While the German part of the Ore Mountains is densely populated, the Bohemian side offers pure tranquility. This part of the Ore Mountains is entirely different—much more expansive, quieter, and above all, more rustic. A hike through its nature to spectacular viewpoints is always a truly unique experience.

On a hike around Měděnec (Kupferberg), I came across this beautiful unnamed viewpoint. From a rock deep in the forest, there is a magnificent view into the Eger Valley, with the Duppauer Mountains in the background.
Behind the term Mrtvý rybník (Dead Pond), one might expect something less than pleasant. However, it is a natural beauty that is quite unique. The pond got its name due to its nearly black color, which comes from the peat. It was formed in the 16th century due to mining in the region.
Near Plešivec (Plessberg) lies the “Swiss View”. In former times, this view attracted thousands of tourists. There were so many visitors that a restaurant, the Schweizer Baude, was even built nearby. Kovářská (Schmiedeberg) in the Bohemian part of the Ore Mountains is the starting point for numerous hikes through a unique natural landscape. The former limestone quarry Schmiedeberg is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Montanregion Erzgebirge. The landscape offers unique views of the highest peaks of the Ore Mountains – simply beautiful.
From the train station in Kovářská (Schmiedeberg) in the Bohemian part of the Ore Mountains, there is a great view of the 1,244-meter-high Klínovec (Keilberg). The railway line runs from Vejprty (Weipert) to Chomutov (Komotau) and is currently only used for tourist traffic on weekends.
Yesterday, I briefly visited the Great Spitzberg (Velký Špičák) in the Bohemian part of the Ore Mountains. This mountain is one of my favorite spots in the region. It’s worth a visit in any weather.
Kurort Oberwiesenthal is Germany’s highest town. There are wonderful hiking trails around the town that are waiting to be explored. One can even hike cross-border. The Bohemian part of the Ore Mountains is always worth a visit.
